–Olivia Delancy and Ahriahna Grizzle combined to score 40 total points, but the Rattlers fell to the Houston Cougars 79-59 on the road Sunday.
Delancy led the Rattlers (1-6) with 22 points. Grizzle tacked on 18 points and five steals and Peryonna Sylvester chipped in as well with eight points and two steals.
Florida A&M’s defense held Houston to only 38.2 percent shooting from the field.
How It Happened
Florida A&M struggled out of the gate, falling behind 26-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The Rattlers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 44-21 halftime deficit.
Houston continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 56-29 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Ivet Subirats, to trim its deficit to 56-34 with 3:03 to go in the third. Houston countered and stretched its lead to 66-40 heading into the fourth. Florida A&M played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
Houston kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 79-49 advantage before Florida A&M went on a 10-0 run, finished off by Delancy’s three, to shrink the deficit to 79-59 with seven seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Florida A&M took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
